Bookends!
Mary Rose was asked to make two sets of bookends…. A wonderful commission because it’s unlikely you could buy ceramic bookends anywhere, and Mary Rose always loves to defeat “the conventions of custom”… it was one of Mary Rose’s dearest customers in Hattiesburg who provided the inspiration. It isn’t one vase that’s been cut in half its two vases both with the edge sliced off and then welded onto the slab built bookend part. Unfortunately the project was dogged with the clay cracking while drying…. Maybe if somebody here was a scientific genius they could identify the crucial elements of size and mass that make certain projects “Crackable”… but it still takes us by surprise when it happens. Anyway from 3 attempts she only managed to make one perfect pair and here they are. It’s not a project that she’s keen to do again in this form so perhaps these will be the only Mary Rose bookends ever or perhaps she might try a simpler version. It is the perfect piece of unexpected home décor .
